Governors

The Role of the Governors

The Governors, who are all volunteers, are responsible for the strategic oversight of the School. We promote high standards and aim to provide all our students with an outstanding education in a supportive environment.

The Headteacher, runs the School on a day to day basis but we hold him to account for the School’s Performance through critical challenge and support. We have many other statutory duties including the School’s ethos, aims and values.

Some Governors are elected by Parents and Staff, whilst others have specialist skills and/or links into the Community we serve. Our backgrounds include education, business and the public and voluntary sectors.

The Governors meet together at least once a term and visit the school on a regular basis. If you wish to contact the Governors, you can do so through the Headteacher's PA, Mrs Cooper on 01692 402581.

Governors' Attendance at Meetings 2021-2022

Russell Solly

Role: Trust Appointed Governor and Chair of Governors

Date Appointed:  23 February 2019

I have returned to my role as Chair of Governors, a position I’ve held in the past at North Walsham High School. I first became a Governor when my children attended the school and have been privileged to continue working with the staff and students in various capacities. I have a background in Education and for some years chaired the Norfolk Cricket Boards Youth Committee. I was a member of the team that was able to bring the Atrium project to the school for the benefit of the community. I am particularly interested in supporting the school’s German Exchange programme. It is my wish to ensure that the school provides the best possible opportunities academically, socially and culturally for all its students. I enjoy all sports especially cricket, reading and travel.

Role: Parent Governor

Date Appointed:  8 January 2020

I am very happy to be elected as a parent governor at North Walsham High School.  I have lived in the town for the past nine years, eight of which I worked at the school.  Both my children have attended the school, my daughter left last year and my son is currently in Year 10.

Whilst I worked at the school, my role as Communications Manager and PA to the Deputy Headteacher gave me a good understanding of the school and how education works.  It also enabled me to meet lots of our local stakeholders, community and parents.  I know that the pupils at North Walsham High School have so much potential and I could help them reach this.  It is because of this; I chose to become a Governor.

I now work in a large Norfolk based Multi Academy Trust so my connection with education continues. I hope my knowledge of the local area and the community, combined with my knowledge of MATs and education, will allow me to contribute well to the Local Governing Board.

In my spare time, I like to run, bake and spend time with my family and friends.

Role: Parent Governor

Date Appointed:  8 January 2020

I was honoured to have been invited to join the Governing Board in early 2020. I am proud to be a parent of a child at the school and glad to help the school continue to flourish and grow.  I have been a company director for the last 26 years and I am a serving magistrate in Norfolk. I hope in my role I can bridge the gap between the school and the parents and be an effective voice for both.  I am also keen to help support the wellbeing and behaviour of our students so they can grow into confident and successful adults in the future.

Role: Trust Appointed Governor

Date Appointed:  20 November 2019

I'm really excited to be a governor at North Walsham High School. Having worked in the town for 12 years, I feel part of the community and am genuinely passionate about supporting the young people of North Walsham.  The town has so much potential and it is really important that the school remains at the heart of it.
I have been a teacher and held leadership and management positions, both pastoral and curriculum, at Paston College and City College Norwich and hope my experiences can benefit the school as we move forward.
Away from work, I am a keen footballer and since hanging up my boots, I have been coaching my son's U6 team, something I love doing!

I am delighted to have been invited to join the Governing Board of North Walsham High School.  I have previously served on two other governing bodies and also Chair the Local Advisory Board of a high school in Norwich.  I work for the Educational Psychology Service supporting schools in relation to bereavement and trauma, as well as leading on suicide prevention activities.  I am particularly keen to promote the health and well-being of pupils, which also has a positive impact on educational outcomes.  I believe that good quality teaching, high expectations of all students both in relation to their learning and their behaviour, coupled with appropriate support for those who are facing particular challenges, will lead to positive academic achievement and happy and confident young people who are prepared for their next steps in life.

Role: Trust Appointed Governor

Date Appointed:  8 January 2020

I am delighted to be a Governor at North Walsham High School. I have lived in North Walsham for all my adult life and know the High School well; both my children were happy here and left with good GCSE results and have gone on to pursue successful careers.  I have been a manager in education for over 25 years, firstly at City College Norwich and then as Assistant and Vice Principal at Great Yarmouth College. I am now retired and a Director at ACE in Norwich, a specialist provider of education and training for children and young people who need a different approach to teaching and learning.  I am passionate about all young people being given the best opportunity to achieve their full potential and want to bring my many years of knowledge and experience to help to support the pupils of North Walsham High School.
