Governors
The Role of the Governors
The Governors, who are all volunteers, are responsible for the strategic oversight of the School. We promote high standards and aim to provide all our students with an outstanding education in a supportive environment.
The Headteacher, runs the School on a day to day basis but we hold him to account for the School’s Performance through critical challenge and support. We have many other statutory duties including the School’s ethos, aims and values.
Some Governors are elected by Parents and Staff, whilst others have specialist skills and/or links into the Community we serve. Our backgrounds include education, business and the public and voluntary sectors.
The Governors meet together at least once a term and visit the school on a regular basis. If you wish to contact the Governors, you can do so through the Headteacher's PA, Mrs Cooper on 01692 402581.

Russell SollyRole: Trust Appointed Governor and Chair of Governors Date Appointed: 23 February 2019
I have returned to my role as Chair of Governors, a position I’ve held in the past at North Walsham High School. I first became a Governor when my children attended the school and have been privileged to continue working with the staff and students in various capacities. I have a background in Education and for some years chaired the Norfolk Cricket Boards Youth Committee. I was a member of the team that was able to bring the Atrium project to the school for the benefit of the community. I am particularly interested in supporting the school’s German Exchange programme. It is my wish to ensure that the school provides the best possible opportunities academically, socially and culturally for all its students. I enjoy all sports especially cricket, reading and travel.

I am delighted to be a Governor at North Walsham High School. I have lived in North Walsham for all my adult life and know the High School well; both my children were happy here and left with good GCSE results and have gone on to pursue successful careers. I have been a manager in education for over 25 years, firstly at City College Norwich and then as Assistant and Vice Principal at Great Yarmouth College. I am now retired and a Director at ACE in Norwich, a specialist provider of education and training for children and young people who need a different approach to teaching and learning. I am passionate about all young people being given the best opportunity to achieve their full potential and want to bring my many years of knowledge and experience to help to support the pupils of North Walsham High School. |

I am delighted to be a Governor of NWHS. I have lived in North Walsham for about 11 years and have seen the school positively develop during that time; especially delighted to see the recent improvement in pupils’ appearance, behaviour and performance. In my working life, I have had many different roles within the insurance industry, one was managing the complaints team in Aviva- that was fun! In 2009, and in a position to take redundancy from Aviva, I gained a role within the apprenticeship area in CCN, managing the business focused assessors. I found this role especially rewarding, supporting both assessors and learners to achieve their best potential. I hope that I can utilise some of what I have learnt over my working years for the good of the school and pupils, as well as gaining knowledge about education and schools for myself.

Lucy ShiresRole: Trust Appointed Governor Date Appointed: 05th March 2024
I am honoured to have been invited to serve as a School Governor at North Walsham High School. My dedication to education governance began during my time as a Governor at Happisburgh C of E VA Primary, where I served for almost six years. During this time I took on the role of Chair of Governors, working closely with the Head Teacher, senior leadership team, and governing body to elevate educational standards. In this capacity, I led the Governing Board in setting a clear vision, ethos, and strategic direction for the school, ensuring accountability for educational performance, staff management, and the school's financial performance. My leadership was marked by successful structural transformations, data-driven improvements in educational outcomes, effective stakeholder engagement, and a steadfast commitment to the school's values. During this time, I achieved a 'Leadership and Management' certificate from the National College of Teaching and Leadership. I am dedicated to supporting the growth and success of our school community, ensuring every student at North Walsham High School has the opportunity to thrive.
As a County and District Councillor, I am committed to making a positive impact on community development and championing initiatives for community prosperity. Throughout my public service roles, I have actively engaged in advocacy, addressing the unique needs and concerns of North Walsham residents through effective representation and collaboration with local stakeholders. My contributions include promoting sustainable development initiatives, fostering community engagement, and ensuring prudent financial management through budget oversight. My experiences have shaped my approach to governance and leadership. I am dedicated to leveraging my skills in public policy, performance management, community engagement, communication, and analytical thinking to support the growth and success of our school community, ensuring a vibrant and inclusive environment for all. |

Dan CarterRole: Parent Governor Date Appointed: 16th January 2024
I am honoured to be a parent governor at North Walsham High School in 2024 for a number of reasons. I started my own teaching career as a History teacher at the school in 2002. I loved working at the school and stayed for 8 years. I have gone on to have a successful career in education since leaving NWHS in 2010, becoming a headteacher and an executive for a multi academy trust. I want to use those skills and experiences to give something back to the community where my career started and where I have chosen to live and bring up my family. I’m proud that my own two children are now flourishing at NWHS, and want to support the school to continue to improve as a governor.
