Year 9 Options
Dear Year 9 Pupil and their parent/carers,
Welcome to your Options choices.
Making choices in Year 9 is a very important part of your time in school. It is an opportunity for you to take control of your education and shape the way you want your future to be. The options you choose will affect how you spend your time at school for the next two years. These choices may also influence what course or job you decide to do after Year 11. Therefore, it is vital we provide you with clear and informed guidance as to the choices available at North Walsham High School.
This booklet aims to describe all subjects within our curriculum that students who are currently in Year 9 will study during Year 10 and 11.
Every subject has provided information within this booklet regarding the course, specification and how you will be assessed. There is also an option video for each subject, including the compulsory subjects, for you to watch. These videos should help you make a decision about which options you would like to take and study further.
All students will continue to take English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Combined Science, Core PE and PSHE. This will then leave students with four option choices to make; at least one choice must be a humanities (Geography/History) or language (French). These central, core subjects will allow you to extend your knowledge and skills further while making choices in other areas, based on your own abilities and preferences.
Students should consider a broad and balanced curriculum, considering the EBACC and different types of qualifications available (these will be explained in more detail on Page 5 & 7). Please note that separate Sciences offer three GCSE’s instead of the compulsory two and will include single GCSE awards in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This is an option at NWHS and should be discussed with your Science teachers.
You are able to book appointments to discuss the options with your teachers at Options Evening (Teachers for each subject are listed at the top of each subject page:
Thursday 4th March 2021, 3:30-6:30pm.
Further details will be emailed to parents on 23rd February 2021 with a booking link.
We will endeavour to ensure students get their first choice of options but this will not always be the case. There is no guarantee all subjects will run as this will depend on the number of students who choose the option.
The deadline for submitting your options choices is:
Thursday March 11th 2021
