Headteachers Letter 11.09.20

Posted on: 11th September 2020

Dear parents and carers,

Whilst I have written to you regarding our return to school plans and have been a part of Year 6 transition videos I feel this is my first opportunity to write to you all and introduce myself.

I feel incredibly proud to be the Headteacher of North Walsham High School and I am tremendously excited to get the school year started and to work with families, staff and pupils alike. In terms of myself I am relatively new to Norfolk as I move here with my young family but my wife knows the area very well having grown up on the edge of Norwich. We are currently in the process of moving into the local area and I am very keen to be a part of the community. I have already visited the area during a variety of sporting events both playing rugby against North Walsham Vikings and completing Parkruns at Blickling Hall with my dog.

So far in our first week back in school we have welcomed four year groups back and I have been incredibly impressed with the start pupils have made getting used to new routines and throwing themselves into their learning. We have taken the time to go through with each year group the changes we have made to the school site and our site team must be thanked for the excellent job they have done.

Alongside this we have taken the time to ensure pupils are aware of our core values that will underpin all the actions that we, as a school, take moving forward. These values are Trust, Resilience, Excellence and Kindness and we can already see pupils living out these values throughout the school day. Finally, time has been taken to introduce “The North Walsham Way” and
Knowledge Organisers. “The North Walsham Way” is a document which outlines simply and clearly our expectations of pupils in every aspect of school life and pupils will revisit this on a weekly basis. Knowledge Organisers are a way to summarise the key foundational knowledge required for each topic covered by a subject. These will be used on a daily basis in lessons and for home learning to ensure pupils can be successful.

I will also take this opportunity to update parents on a few key points. Firstly, at the end of last year the decision was taken to not continue with the use of Frog as an online learning platform. Due to the success of using Google Classrooms during the remote learning period we will continue with this platform. Mrs Gatward will write to you early next week outlining our approach to home learning and how this will relate to Google Classrooms. Alongside this we are currently working on our school website to ensure it is fully up to date and we aim to have this completed by the end of next week. Finally, to ensure everyone is aware we have our school photographs taking place on the 14th
September throughout the day. The company have worked closely with us to ensure they are compliant with current Covid19 restrictions and parents will be able to order their photographs online in the coming future.

This September we also welcome two new members of staff. Mr Phipps joins the school as an Assistant Headteacher in charge of behaviour and pastoral systems and Miss Leveridge joins us as an Art teacher.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents and carers for the support they have given us in helping get pupils back into school and ensuring they are fully equipped.

I will look to communicate with you all regularly via my Headteacher letters and I am excited for the future at North Walsham High School. We will put the success and happiness of our pupils at theheart of everything we do.

Your sincerely

Mr J. Gosden
