Headteachers Letter 23.09.20

Posted on: 24th September 2020

Dear parents and carers,

I hope this email finds you well.  I wanted to write to you all to give you an update on how the return to school has gone and how the pupils are settling in.  Alongside this as evidence shows an increasing rate of Covid-19 transmission I will share the changes to our plans in light of this evidence and the lessons we have learnt from the past two weeks.

In school from today we will be making the following changes:

  1. Increase our use of hand sanitiser

Whilst we have had clear plans and strategies in place regarding the use of hand sanitiser we have increased the number of points in the day when we will remind students to use and apply hand sanitiser.

  2. Stagger the end of the day

At the end of the day we will dismiss classes at different times. This will reduce the number of students leaving the school gates at the same time. In this plan we have accounted for students who need to catch the bus.

  3. Groups of 6

To reflect the new regulations outside of school we will be advising students that they should not be socialising in groups of more than 6.

  4. Moving the Year 10 Zone

From the week beginning 5th October Year 10 will swap their classroom zones, after a weekend of deep cleaning, with Year 9.

I am incredibly proud of the resilience shown by our students as they have adapted to our new school routines and layout and as a result the plans detailed above are small adaptations and not major changes.  We have considered other changes but do not feel these are necessary at this time.  I am sure as this situation continues many of you will have worries and if you have any questions please do get in contact.  Alongside this the Department for Education have asked schools to share a copy of their letter and this is attached to this email.

I will take this opportunity to remind you of two points from our plan that are still in place:

  1. Please do not drop students off before 8.15am

  2. Face coverings can be worn to and from school and between lessons. If pupils wish to wear a face covering in lessons, I ask that parents/carers get in contact with me.

Inside of the classroom students have been striving for excellence and two key approaches are helping with this.  Firstly “The North Walsham Way”.  This is a document that has been shared with all students and staff and is revisited every week in tutor time.  This outlines the expectations we have of students in all aspects of school life and has been designed with Covid-19 restrictions in place.  This clarity is helping students focus on their learning and I have been very impressed with the atmosphere in lessons.  For clarity I have attached the document to this communication.

Secondly, as detailed in Mrs Gatward’s letter last week we have introduced Knowledge Organisers and Do Now tasks.  As a result, at the start of every lesson students will complete a Do Now task in silence that will help them recall key knowledge allowing them to secure excellent results.  Please do visit the Home Learning page of our website for more details and how you can support (

Finally, we have had feedback that some parents are unable to login to Class Charts to view the merits and consequences that students have received.  As such students, this week, will be bringing home login codes to share with you.

As always if you have any feedback for us as a school or wish to discuss anything with me please do get in contact.

Kind regards

Mr J. Gosden
